I just finished The Light Pirate. I was raised in North Florida, so a lot of it hit in a way that fiction typically doesn't. You can tell that the author is definitely from Florida, or has spent ample time there. I don't know how accurate the tale will end up being, as it predicts the future, but it seems pretty reasonable to me. Even the protagonist's "gift" isn't too distracting from the realism.
Still having family in Florida, I do my best to encourage them to leave before SHTF down there. But what can you say? They'll believe whatever they want to believe.
Oh wow, I BET it hit differently. I really loved the specificity about Florida in the story. I spent so much of the book being like "why are they not leaving?!!!" but then it did feel so right by the end that she stayed. An example of being in and of a place and adapting to that place.
