Glad you made it through the storm. I'd really advise staying away from a "kit" for anything. The contents tend to be crappy and over priced. Go with reputable brands and test your gear.

I always roll with:

-A tow strap

-Jumper cables

-A 2 person sleeping bag

-Water

-A flashlight

-A Li-Ion jumper pack (keep that baby charged!)

-Energy bars

-Window breaker

-Knife

-Fire extinguisher

-Comprehensive trauma first aid kit

-Phone charger

When I go to the mountains I also bring:

-A shovel

-Bolt cutters (for getting through closed gates in a forest fire)

-Water purification (lifestraw)

-A folding saw (for downed trees)

-A ratchet set

-Zip ties

-Kevlar reinforced duct tape

I've used every one of these items to save myself or to help others. I added a 12000lbs winch to the truck this year after spending a night stuck off the road in a snow storm.

Thanks Stephan! Haha, it's these kinds of lists that overwhelm me and then I just don't end up doing anything! But this is super helpful, nonetheless.

I should add that there was a thread on the Liberal Preppers Facebook group about what should go in a car emergency kit and whoah boy it got heated as to what folks recommended or did not recommend. I almost got out the popcorn.

Maybe another way to think about it...

1) Stuff to stay safe and comfortable waiting for help

2) Stuff to handle likely inconveniences

3) Stuff to help others or handle unlikely situations

You're the only one who can make the "right" list based on your own needs

I like that way of thinking!

I live in Maine, so I have a stupid amount of stuff in my trunk in case I go off the road--but mostly a blanket (or 3,) snacks, and water are the most important for me. I've used those the most! It helps when rescuing others too. :)
