Hello beautiful community!
I have a fun piece of swag that some of you might be interested in: a hat! A very cool hat with a very cool design on it!
But first, I would like to acknowledge the irony/hypocrisy of a climate writer who rails against capitalism constantly hawking her merch to her audience. So I come to you with a disclaimer/content warning/opportunity to check your spending on stuff you don’t need. A disclaimer that I recognize the hypocrisy of this and a reminder that if you don’t need a hat, please don’t buy this one (or any other hat for that matter)!
I wasn’t intending to make this available to people at first, I really had the intention of having my friend Mia design a sticker (oh and I did make stickers, but you need to be a paid subscriber to get one of those!). But when I saw the design, I immediately wanted to put it on my head!
I chose a hat because, frankly, I need a hat and I will absolutely wear this one a lot. The one I’ve been wearing for the last several years is reaching the “end of its useful life” as they say in engineering. I didn’t want a T-shirt because I have approximately 2 billion T-shirts and, thus, don’t need yet another one. So I am offering this to you not to make money, but to put it out there to folks who might also need a hat and really want a cute and funny one to wear around. Also, it’s a great conversation starter about preparedness and prepping.
Now to the design! One of the things that I have tried to do with this Substack is to demystify preparedness. To uncouple the concept from the right wing. And also to make it less scary. This design kind of represents that. I love the contrast between happy sun and rainbows and the “doom” of a zombie and a bunny in a gas mask. It’s silly, but also a great conversation starter. And my incredibly talented friend Mia Nolting did a fantastic job bringing this to life in her drawing.
BTW– Mia is currently looking for new projects. She’s an incredible illustrator as you can see, but she’s also a super talented art director and graphic designer (she can send you her portfolio upon request—she’s working to update her website to include that, but for now you can just reach out for those). Check her illustrations out here!
With that…I am making these hats available to you! You can buy one for yourself. But only buy it if you really need it. Also, because this is print-on-demand, this reduces waste and Printful, the company that I use often uses recycled materials as and is very sustainable on their practice. This isn’t justification for an unnecessary purchase, but there you have it.
